Hey Fam:
For some people it’s the beat. And yeah, the beat is cool. It’s the undercurrent that brings everything together. But you know what absolutely, positively drew ME to music when I was younger? The lyrics. To this DAY! The words of a song hold enormous power for me. Yep, I was 100% that kid hitting pause on my boom box (hush, it was the 80s) every 5 seconds so I could write down the lyrics. I loved hip hop especially because I lived for a good metaphor. Before it was books and poetry, I wrote songs. I wrote stories over whatever beat I could find.
I share this with you because I’ve come to realize something: our lives have a beat. It’s the day to day, ins and outs, ups and downs. There’s a rhythm to what we do and when. The beat is important.
But then there’s the story... Aww, shucks! Our story has so much power. So much meaning. The story is the HOW. How we choose to move through the beats of life. It’s the character we’ll have as we do that. And guess what? WE GET TO WRITE IT! We get to write our stories. What an amazing opportunity. Every day, a new verse. A new hook. And friend, TRUST...we can tell our story over ANY beat we’re given.
So what are you writing this week? What story are you telling?
Love you,
